Securing the Watchers: Battle Against Threats in Video Surveillance

Monday, March 31-12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Session Description:
This panel discussion centered on federal law enforcement's use of video surveillance systems and the growing cybersecurity risks associated with their widespread deployment. Experts from both federal agencies and private security firms highlighted how these smart surveillance systems, while crucial for enhancing physical security and supporting law enforcement operations, have become potential entry points for cyberattacks due to their network connectivity and often overlooked vulnerabilities. Over 1 billion cameras have been deployed globally since 2021, and the number is growing rapidly. This panel emphasized how security breaches in these systems could lead to missioncritical failures, potentially compromising ongoing investigations or operations. They stressed the urgent need for a holistic approach to security that integrates physical and digital protection strategies, particularly in the context of federal law enforcement's unique requirements and challenges. The discussion highlighted the necessity for collaboration between federal agencies, private security firms, and technology providers. This collective approach is crucial to ensuring the protection and functionality of these systems and continuing to enhance security activities. The experts also addressed the balance between leveraging cutting-edge surveillance technologies and maintaining robust cybersecurity measures, utilizing tools such as AI. This panel will discuss best practices for secure implementation and management of these systems, emphasizing the importance of ongoing personnel training and the development of comprehensive incident response plans. Ultimately, the panel underscored that protecting these critical surveillance systems is a shared responsibility that requires continuous vigilance, innovation, and cooperation across sectors to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats and ensure the integrity of law enforcement operations.
